Šekspīrs uz Latvijas skatuvēm

The Latvian Society celebrated the life and works of William Shakespeare at April's Final Friday Happy Hour.  One of Latvia's finest Hamlets, Ivars Stonins, along with friend and colleague Sandra Zeidenberga-Jansone delved into Hamlet's Act 3, Scene 1 exploring the question —  "To be or not to be?"  in both Latvian and English. Oh to ponder the burdens of living and dying... the thousands of heartaches and natural miseries human beings have to endure...

The downstairs Shakespeare exhibit  — "To be or not to be" featured obects and photographs from various productions of Hamlet in Latvia over the years. Sandra Milevski and the "120x120" organizing team had even acquired (on loan) Hamlet's crown and goblet from the Liepāja Theater in Liepāja, Latvia for display.

The April Final Friday festivities also provided the opportunity to follow the captivating sequence of historic events related to the existence and persistence of the Philadelphia Society of Free Letts as presented by historian Kārlis Berziņš. This evening focused on the third 30-year period, the years 1952 to 1982.

More than 30 followers and fans of the Bērziņš lecture series crowded the Latvian Society's back room to hear the anecdotes, stories and results of his research. A great big thanks to Kārlis for the valuable research and documentation he has done on behalf of the Philadelphia Society of Free Letts.

Laiks izsijā pelavas — koncertuzvedums "Pasakas par ziediem"

 
Latvijas Koncerti 2012 organizētais koncertuzvedums Annas Sakses "Pasakas par ziediem" notika Filadelfijā Sv. Jāņa draudzes telpās 2012. g. 15. aprīlī.

Trīs mākslinieki, komponists Valts Pūce, stāstnieks Gundars Āboliņš un flautiste Dita Krenberga sniedza Annas Sakses "Pasakas par ziediem" Filadelfijas publikai.

Literatūrzinātnieks Raimonds Briedis teica: "Saksei tas būtu paticis. Domāju, ka viņa visu mūžu mēģināja aizmirst romānu "Pret kalnu". "  Pati Anna Sakse savureiz bildusi: "Mūs, vecos rakstniekus, tagd reizēm sauc par nemoderniem, pārmet mums to, ka esam bijuši tieši tādi, kādi bijām. Bet tāds taču bija laiks. Pārtikām ar rupju maizi, nevis smalkmaizītēm." Turpina Annas Sakses daiļrades pētniece Ingūna Daukste-Silasproģe: "Iespējams, šajos rakstnieces vārdos meklējam atbildi, vēŗtējot Sakses daiļradi, kas tapusi laikā, kad vienos svaru kausos saplūda literatūra, māksla un ideoloģija. Laiks izsijā pelavas. Ja notraucam laika un aikmeta uzslāņojumus no Annas Sakses darbiem, tie uzrunā arī šodien, īpaši "Pasakas par ziediem". Paradoksāli - tie rakstnieces darbi, kuŗi tapa sava aikmeta ideoloģijas zīmē, tika slavēti, taču nu zaudēuši literāro vērtību un ir vien liecības par aizgājušo laikmetu, turpretim "Pasakas par ziediem" uzplaukst arī 21. gadsimtā."
